as we once would quip as a friend’s monologue began, ‘smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em!’

we are taught to see ‘white’ as an absence of flaw, a state of grace from which we have fallen. this is the myth of the empty canvas, the sterile room, the ‘original sin.’

but the pearl does not exist without the grit. she is born from the center of all things, the very womb of the imperfectly perfect universe. in each of these twelve tracks, i placed a single fleeting harmonic, a true note that vibrates against the ‘off-white’ textures of the arrangement. it is the blemish. it is the reminder that what we call ‘impurity’ is actually the core of the all things, all humans. we do not hide our nature because it is broken. we hide it because we have been convinced that the polished surface is the only thing worthy of the light. these notes are the sound of the truth under paint.

you already know something most listeners don’t, that the surface is never the performance. the performance is what’s happening underneath the surface while the surface holds still.

that’s this piece of music.

off-white is an album of instrumental music, inspired by a criminally underrated film, nieva en benidorm(it snows in benidorm) (2020). it started as a piece of dialog i couldn’t ignore:

in a pivotal scene, alex tells peter that he is different from daniel, his brother, in that he is innocent. but we come to realize that peter is but one grain of sand, an inner shadow, of the pearl his life has become.

alex too is a pearl. she has a dubious, off-white past, but she refuses to reveal her past, her true self, which characterizes her as yet another pearl on the cosmic string. she ‘loves white’ but covers her own inner grain of sand with black, a color she chooses to wear with each outfit (after she ‘kisses’ peter, she opts for some white, then an engrossing, passionate red, not to mention the very gray peter begins to adopt color himself, but i digress, again), and her seemingly dark exterior vibe, a blackened pearl if you will.

each song is one ‘pearl’ on just one string of infinite off-white pearls. the music ‘sounds white’ not as in complexion, but as in variations of off-white. titles are simply hex codes, twelve total (12 = divine order – twelve tribes, apostles, zodiac signs. cosmic completeness), as reflected in each listed track’s companion graphic, its respective off-white hex code.

eleven of these tracks are concealment. coverage, if you prefer, polish laid over a wound the way nacre gets laid over a grain of sand, pass after pass, until the coating is the only story anyone’s willing to tell. one track breaks character. no processing, no reverb, nothing standing between the note and the room. if you’ve ever had someone tell you to stop acting and just let the moment sit exposed, that’s track seven. you’ll know it when you hear it, the same way you know it when the room goes quiet, and nothing is asking you to sell anything anymore.

and there’s a color that never got a track number. she’s not on the string, she moves underneath it. black, worn on purpose, not to disappear but to close the question before anyone can ask it. every ensemble needs one performance like that, the one who isn’t hiding a secret so much as refusing to hand it over. listen for where the low end drops out. she’s there.

this isn’t a film score. nobody’s walking down a hallway to it. it’s hopefully closer to a character study for instruments, twelve strategies for wearing composure, and the one moment composure isn’t required. it’s twelve ‘impossible’ pearls. infinite impossible strings. somewhere on it, something impossibly true. somewhere beneath it, is something, someone, still deciding whether or not to be perfectly ‘imperfect.’

ok, it’s getting smoky in here.

kind of off-white.

tracklist

01. #fffafa, snow

theme: the impossible ideal, stated first and then let go. the album opens with the one color it can never actually sustain.

music prompt: solo bowed vibraphone or glass harmonica, extreme high register, single sustained tone with long cold reverb tail. no rhythm, no low end. the note is held past comfort, then simply allowed to decay into silence, establishing purity as something that can only ever be brief.

02. #f5f5f5, white smoke

theme: manufactured cleanliness. hazy, synthetic, the sound of a lobby that’s been sanitized into blankness.

music prompt: soft filtered synth pads with a faint air-conditioning hum underneath, brushed hi-hats, no clear melody, ambient and slightly artificial, like muzak with the warmth removed. everything slightly out of focus, as if heard through glass.

03. #fffff0, ivory

theme: ornamental. polished. built to be admired rather than touched.

music prompt: solo grand piano, precise and slightly cold, baroque-influenced ornamentation, trills and grace notes that decorate rather than express. close-miked so every hammer strike is audible, emphasizing the mechanism behind the elegance.

04. #faebd7, antique white

theme: something old, being preserved rather than resolved.

music prompt: a habanera figure played on nylon guitar and accordion, recorded with tape hiss and wow-and-flutter, as if pulled from an old maritime recording. slow 3/4 waltz sway, deliberately worn and faded at the edges, the coast’s oldest song form heard through decades of dust.

05. #ffe4c4, bisque

theme: the first real warmth. skin-toned. a human note entering after four tracks of surface.

music prompt: solo cello and breath, audible bow contact, string noise, occasional room sound left in. simple, unhurried melodic line, the most physically present and least ‘produced’ track so far.

06. #fffaf0, floral white

theme: the meeting. a bridal echo that’s tentative rather than triumphant.

music prompt: music box and harp, rubato and irregular, like a wedding waltz remembered imperfectly. occasional wrong-footed timing, pretty but hollow, a celebration sound with no one actually celebrating.

07. #f8f8ff, ghost white

theme: the outlier pearl. ‘you’re not like your brother, you’re innocent.’ the sparest, truest track on the record.

music prompt: a single instrument, solo violin or voice-like theremin, recorded completely dry, no reverb, no processing, no other instruments. long tones, minimal vibrato, total silence around every note. this is the one place the album stops hiding anything; the arrangement itself is the honesty.

08. #faf0e6, linen

theme: unbleached. plain. the sound of no longer performing.

music prompt: acoustic guitar, unprocessed and close-mic’d, fingers audible on the strings, imperfect timing left in. plain, unadorned melody with no ornamentation, deliberately the least ‘beautiful’ track on the album by design.

09. #fdf5e6, old lace

theme: delicate. layered. the pearl-coating made audible, texture built one thin pass at a time.

music prompt: interlocking arpeggiated guitar or harp lines, each layer entering slightly after the last, building a dense, lace-like weave over several minutes. no single layer is loud, but the accumulation becomes rich and slightly claustrophobic.

10. #ffefd5, papaya whip

theme: warmth returning after track 7’s bareness.

music prompt: warm analog synth pad with a gentle, returning pulse, a heartbeat-like rhythm reintroduced after the previous tracks’ stillness. soft dolçaina melody line floats on top, distant and half-remembered, the coast’s own folk instrument reappearing changed.

11. #ffebcd, blanched almond

theme: cold and warm meeting, deliberately unresolved.

music prompt: two competing timbres, a cold synth drone against a warm bowed cello line, playing overlapping but not quite harmonizing melodies, a persistent close dissonance that never resolves to consonance. the track ends mid-tension rather than landing.

12. #f5f5dc, beige

theme: the most ordinary white of all. not snow, not pearl, just what’s left after.

music prompt: a plain, unhurried piano or acoustic guitar theme: echoing fragments of tracks 1 and 7 faintly underneath, recorded with room noise, footsteps, a chair, a window, left audible. no swell, no climax. the album simply runs out of things to hide, and stops.

the harmonic mapping (for my fellow nerds)

each harmonic note sits within the key of its track, acting as that singular, undeniable point of resonance. i mixed them apart from the main mix so each track begins with that ‘dark’ granule of sand, and then is layered upon by the pearl, the song, as the note randomly fades in and out of the song, and concludes the song. to me, it is the core of each off-white pearl, but it does not determine our destiny. we do, as pearls.

harmonic degrees, you ask?

  • snow (g minor) – ghost tone (core), perfect 5th (d), a cold, high harmonic that anchors the sustained tone.
  • white smoke (d# minor) – ghost tone (core), major 7th (d), a sharp, crystalline edge that cuts through the synthetic haze.
  • ivory (d minor) – ghost tone (core), perfect 4th (g), a suspended note that challenges the baroque precision.
  • antique white (c major) – ghost tone (core), major 6th (a), a nostalgic, sweet resonance buried in the tape hiss.
  • bisque (g minor) – ghost tone (core), minor 3rd (bb), the most human, vulnerable interval, mirroring the cello’s breath.
  • floral white (e minor) – ghost tone (core), major 9th (f#), an ethereal, slightly tense extension above the music box.
  • ghost white (g major) – ghost tone (core), tonic (g), a pure, unadorned unison. the only track where the blemish and the surface are the same.
  • linen (g major) – ghost tone (core), major 2nd (a), a simple, plain dissonance that feels like rough fabric.
  • old lace (d major) – ghost tone (core), major 7th (c#), a delicate, shimmering thread woven into the interlocking lines.
  • papaya whip (d minor) – ghost tone (core), perfect 5th (a), a warm, grounding pillar for the pulsing synth.
  • blanched almond (g minor) – ghost tone (core), augmented 4th (db), the ‘devil’s interval,’ a tritone to heighten the unresolved tension.
  • beige (bb major) – ghost tone (core), major 3rd (d), a warm, stable end that finally lets the sequence rest.
  • d4 = 293.665 hz
  • g4 = 391.995 hz
  • a4 = 440.000 hz
  • bb4 = 466.164 hz
  • f#4 = 369.994 hz
  • c#4 = 277.183 hz
  • db4 = 277.183 hz
