If you’ve yet to listen to “Trio,” the eponymous 1981 debut album by the Neue Deutsche Welle minimal synth trio of the same name, you can thank me later. But for now, below is my spin on the barely-there record.

The original band sang in both German and English, so I somehow arrived at the notion that this bastard child of Trio, “trias,” is similar to the original but their lyrics and vocals are in Latin. Of course. Why Latin? Good question, but it works, for me, and hopefully you.

It’s optimally listened to in one sitting, hence no individual track downloads below. And if you have a good set of headphones, slap ‘em on, or just crank the stereo until a flash mob randomly gathers in your front yard and drags you outside for a good ol’ neighborly robot shuffle.

Genre/Style: Early 1980s German New Wave (Neue Deutsche Welle), minimal synth-punk, deadpan avant-pop. This is pure minimalism. Three instruments sparsely played, making silence and pauses part of their musical scores.

Vocals/Lyrics: The songs’ lyrics and titles explore themes common to what such an early 1980s German New Wave (Neue Deutsche Welle), minimal synth-punk, deadpan avant-pop band would cover. The vocals are sung in ancient Latin, flat, half-spoken/half-sung, deadpan male delivery, almost bored or ironic in tone, minimal melodic range.

Instrumentation:

• Toy keyboard / cheap monophonic synth playing a simple, repetitive, nursery-rhyme-like melodic hook (thin, tinny, slightly out-of-tune character)
• Basic drum machine, dry and unswung, simple two- or four-beat pattern, no fills
• Single clean or lightly overdriven electric guitar, sparse chords or a single riff, plenty of space around it
• No bass guitar. Low end is mostly absent or implied only by the keyboard

Arrangement: Extremely sparse, DIY, unpolished production. Song built around one or two repeating motifs rather than complex progression. Lyrics/vocal delivery treated as another rhythmic instrument, clipped and monotone.Very little reverb or studio polish for raw, close-mic’d, almost amateur vibe.

Song structure: simple, short verses, a hook that repeats until it becomes hypnotic

Mood: Detached, wry, deadpan humor, cool and disaffected but still catchy and pop-hooky; playful minimalism rather than aggression

Tempo/Feel: Mid-tempo, four-on-the-floor or simple backbeat, mechanical but not rigid — a slightly human, off-the-cuff quality despite the drum machine
