Dear Listener,

I want to tell you where this came from, because I think it matters.

I am not an Indian composer or musician. I don’t play tabla, and I can’t write a raga. But what grew was a new love for these songs. I want to be honest about that process rather than romanticize it. This isn’t a recovered lost recording. It’s a new thing, built with new tools, in open homage to a sound and an era I didn’t create and can’t claim. Think of it less as an imitation and more as a love letter, written in a world language I’m still learning, addressed to songs that in the end taught me what longing could sound like.

The visualizer is its own act of resurrection. A Throw of Dice, Franz Osten’s 1929 silent epic, produced by Himanshu Rai, has been sitting in the public domain for anyone willing to look at it. I found it on Wikimedia Commons, watched it in silence the way it was never meant to be watched, and felt the shape of a soundtrack rising up underneath it before I’d written a single note. The film gave the music its bones. The music, I hope, gives the film back its pulse.

You’ll hear vinyl crackle running through all seventy-two minutes of this. That’s a choice, not an accident, a way of admitting that even a brand new recording can long for a past it never had.
