El Humo De La Tierra is a full double album from the band Los Del Sol Resonante. It runs 1 hour, 33 minutes and 30 seconds across 25 tracks. Half of the songs have vocals, and every vocal song is framed by the album’s other half of instrumentals. It is meant to be heard from start to finish, though each track also stands on its own.

About The Album Title, El Humo De La Tierra

In English, the title means “The Smoke of the Earth.” Smoke rises from fire, and fire needs fuel and ground to burn on. The title points at music that comes up from the earth: raw, rhythmic, and a little dangerous, like heat shimmering off the ground. The band name, Los Del Sol Resonante (“The Ones of the Resonant Sun”), pairs sun above with smoke and earth below.

The Sound

This is Latin rock with the grit of 1970s garage rock, and a minimalist, stripped-down post-punk revival attitude. Here is what you’ll hear:

• A raw, overdriven electric guitar riff at the front of the sound.
• A warm, driving bassline that keeps everything moving.
• Congas and timbales for the Latin percussion.
• Gritty, gravelly male lead vocals.
• A deliberately unpolished, analog tape-saturated texture, like a record pulled from a dusty crate.

The tempo is mid-tempo, with an urgent, emotional feel that stays tense and lean. It is not overproduced, and the roughness is intentional.

How The Album Flows

Every song with vocals is book-ended by instrumentals, a habit the great Santana often had. The instrumentals work like doorways in and out of each song. They give the album a flowing, alluring shape, so it plays more like a journey than a pile of separate songs.

The final track is a 21-minute instrumental psychedelic jam called “Al Borde del Infinito…” (“At the Edge of Infinity…”). It takes you to the edge of the universe, and it is where the album takes its time and lets go. Give it your full attention, if you can…
