Instrumental Psychedelic Hausa Jazz: Hausa / West African trance traditions, Hausa music, trance, jazz, electric instrumentation, desert blues, and psychedelic improvisation. Hallucinogenic audio, meant to put a listener into a dream state.
Some nights are silent. This one isn’t.
Dare Mai Sauti is the night with her sound. I built it for the hours when the day has let go of you and your mind is loose enough to wander, sober or otherwise…
Ahem.
It is seventy-seven pieces of instrumental psychedelic Hausa jazz, drawn from the trance traditions of Hausa and West African music. It is electric, hypnotic and meant to dissolve the edges of your evening.
The Sound
The starting point was the desert and the dream. Desert blues gives the mix its long, rolling phrases, the kind that seem to have been traveling across sand for centuries. Jazz gives it freedom, so melodies stretch, wander and return changed. Electric instrumentation brings the shimmer and the haze, while the rhythms underneath keep the trance steady and ancient, like a heartbeat you eventually stop noticing.
Psychedelic improvisation holds it all together, letting each piece drift toward the next without a seam. This is meant to be a hallucinogenic record. It isn’t loud or aggressive. It works slowly, until you realize you’ve been somewhere else for a while.
There are no lyrics, but occasionally you will be dipped in hypnotic vocalizations, textures, syllables, not a distracting language but another instrument. Dig it.
The Mix
I didn’t want seventy-seven separate songs. I wanted one long night with seventy-seven moments in it. The mix moves the way a dream does. One texture melts into the next, a groove surfaces and then slips back under, and a guitar line you thought you knew becomes something stranger.
There are no hard stops where you’d be pulled back to the surface. Listen closely and you’ll catch the transitions, but the idea is that you won’t need to.
Why 3 Hours, 45 Minutes, 38 Seconds?
Because a dream doesn’t end after four minutes. A trance needs time to build, and the first twenty minutes of this album are really the doorway. Most listeners are still carrying the day with them then. Somewhere past the first hour, the mind quiets and the music stops being something you listen to and becomes the place you’re in. The last hours are for staying there.
Does it remind you of the most beautiful of all forms of human “communication?” It is supposed to. Get weird to it, with your partner or damn it, yourself! You’re welcome.
The length is also what the music asked for. With seventy-seven tracks averaging around three minutes each, I kept going until the night felt complete, and it organically ended at 3:45:38. I’d much rather give you a full night’s beautiful dreamscape than a taste of one. I’m no tease.
Where to Listen
A mix this long is a soundtrack for living with, and these are the settings I made it for:
Press play, settle in, and don’t rush. Let the night speak.
Mun gode. Thank you for listening.
