There are records that arrive carrying an explanation.

A story.
A manifesto.
A statement about the artist, the culture, the technology, the politics, the circumstances that brought the songs into being.

Bluegreen Records is interested in something a little different.

The record.

Bluegreen is a TATANKA music label devoted to alternative music with a pop heart. Songs with melodies you can remember. Choruses you might find yourself singing tomorrow. Guitars, voices, rhythms, synths, textures and silence. Music that can live comfortably on the radio without having to surrender its character to get there.

It doesn’t have to announce what it is.

It just has to move you somewhere.

Some Bluegreen Records may be restless. Some reflective. Some beautiful. Some strange. Some may sound familiar the first time you hear them and reveal something unexpected on the tenth.

There is no prescribed message.

No required interpretation.

No obligation for every song to carry the weight of the world.

And there will be no liner notes accompanying the albums.

That is intentional.

We spend an enormous amount of time telling one another what art means before we’ve even experienced it. Bluegreen Records would rather leave a little room around the music.

You don’t need to know what inspired a song.

You don’t need to know what the songwriter was thinking.

You don’t need to know what the producer intended.

You certainly don’t need us whispering in your ear while you’re listening:

This is what you’re supposed to feel.

The song belongs to you once you hear it.

Maybe it reminds you of someone.

Maybe it takes you somewhere you’ve never been.

Maybe you hear something in it that nobody involved in making it ever imagined.

Good.

That’s what music is supposed to do.

Bluegreen Records also isn’t particularly interested in drawing a hard line between “serious” music and popular music. A great hook isn’t a creative failure. A three-minute song isn’t intellectually inferior to a twelve-minute one. Accessibility isn’t the enemy of depth.

Sometimes a song can simply be a really good song.

That’s enough.

The label will grow one record at a time, without a rigid formula for where those records must go. Alternative. Pop. Rock. Electronic. Acoustic. Atmospheric. Whatever vocabulary the next song requires.

The catalog will change.

The artists will change.

The technology will change.

The music will change.

The name can remain.

Bluegreen.

Blue for the distance.

Green for the living world.

Bluegreen for everything that happens between them.

But even that explanation is probably more than we need.

So we’ll stop here.

Put the record on.

Turn it up.

And decide for yourself.
