Biofeedback and Wearable Tech for Stress, Meditation and Fitness

Biofeedback and neurosignaling devices can support physical and emotional health by helping you meditate, relax more deeply, relieve anxiety and stress, and enhance focus for creative work.

You may already be using a biofeedback device such as a Fitbit Activity Wristband.

What is biofeedback? A good definition is provided by Wikipedia:

“Biofeedback is the process of gaining greater awareness of many physiological functions primarily using instruments that provide information on the activity of those same systems, with a goal of being able to manipulate them at will.

“Some of the processes that can be controlled include brainwaves, muscle tone, skin conductance, heart rate…

“Biofeedback may be used to improve health, performance, and the physiological changes that often occur in conjunction with changes to thoughts, emotions, and behavior. (From the Wikipedia Biofeedback page.)

Apollo Neuro Wearable Stress Relief Band

The description by Apollo includes: ‘Apollo Neuro co-founder, Dr. Dave Rabin MD, PhD, explain the technology behind the device and how it’s actually making you more resilient to stress.

‘Stress triggers the “fight or flight” response, making us feel like we’re in danger. The Apollo wearable was developed to signal safety to the brain and interrupt that “fight or flight” response when we’re not actually in danger. It’s like a wearable hug for your nervous system that uses silent, soothing vibrations to rebalance your body and mind.’

The Apollo wearable delivers “soothing vibrations to our touch receptors” according to the company’s site.

High Sensitivity therapist and author Julie Bjelland recommends the device for highly sensitive people.

She notes in a post on her Sensitive Empowerment site that it is is “designed to help your body recover from stress, so you can relax, focus, access creativity, sleep better, and improve overall resilience and mental and physical health.

“I am sound-sensitive, so I LOVE that I can’t hear it. The vibrations are barely deductible and restore balance to the nervous system, improving cardiovascular metrics and sleep and reducing feelings of stress and anxiety.”

What is meditation? Can it help in trauma recovery? We can get unstuck from thoughts and feelings – an interview with Muse co-founder Ariel Garten.

Ariel Garten explains, “Meditation is a practice, or training, that leads to healthy and positive mindsets. Mindfulness is a skill that is built as a result.”

This video is a short excerpt from her conversation “Rewire Your Mind: Meditate To Reprogram & Reduce Trauma” with Dr. Aimie Apigian, host of the 2023 Biology of Trauma 3.0 Summit.

The Muse site says it “was created to help you harness the calming power of meditation to live a more relaxed and present life. 78% of users reported they were calmer and more relaxed since starting their Muse mindfulness journey.”

Health publication Livestrong writer Jess Barron noted:

“According to the American Psychological Association (APA)’s 2010 Stress in American survey nearly 70 percent of Americans experience physical and mental symptoms of stress, but only 37 percent think they are doing very well at managing stress.

“What we hear from people across the world – it crossed all professions – is that stress, anxiety and overwhelm are really out of hand. A lot of this is due to so much change that’s happening. And the way our brains work, we don’t like change – humans do not like change, especially unexpected change.”
