I built these sounds in the dark, on purpose.

Every cue on this record started the same way, with a decision about what silence should feel like before it breaks. Because that’s where this story begins: in the hush before a ship moves that isn’t supposed to move, helmed by a man who isn’t supposed to be free.

I didn’t want to score a history lesson. I wanted to score a decision. The moment before courage becomes action is where all the tension in this album lives, in the low drones that never quite resolve, in rhythms that sound like a heartbeat trying to stay steady when everything says it shouldn’t. That’s the sound of a man standing at a wheel that was never meant to be his, choosing to hold it anyway.

As the record moves, so does the palette. What starts tight and close, claustrophobic, almost, opens up. Harbor into ocean. Confinement into horizon. I wanted you to feel the exact second the danger turns into distance, when running becomes arriving. That’s not a special effect. That’s just what freedom sounds like when you build it one frequency at a time.

I mixed this album for headphones, for early mornings, for the kind of listening where you forget you’re listening and just find yourself standing at the rail of something, watching the dark give way.

Robert Smalls took a wheel that history had already decided wasn’t his to take. Everything I did on this record was in service of that one image, because some stories don’t need embellishment. They just need room to breathe, and a little dark, and a little light, in the right order.
