Hello, and welcome. I’m JJ, the sound designer behind this soundscape. Here’s what you’re about to hear and how to get the most from it.
Put on headphones.
Hidden underneath the music is a very quiet pair of tones, one in each ear, set slightly apart from each other. Your brain blends them into a slow, gentle pulse, six beats per second, called a binaural beat. It only works with headphones, since speakers mix the two ears together and the effect disappears. If you listen on speakers, you’ll still get the music, just without that extra layer.
Keep it quiet.
This is meant to sit softly in the room, not fill it. Turn it down lower than you think you need, then a little lower.
What you won’t hear.
There are no drums, no beat, no vocals, no melody to hum along to, and no sudden moments. Nothing starts with a bang or builds to a climax. Every sound fades in and out so gently that you may not notice exactly when it arrived.
What you will hear.
One low note, an F, hums beneath everything from the first second to the last. It never stops and never changes. Over it, soft pads, bowed strings, a breathy flute, glass harmonica, and harmonium drift slowly through warm, open chords. Every so often a shadow of something more wistful passes through, then the warmth returns. It’s meant to feel sacred without belonging to any one tradition.
How to listen.
However you like. Sit, lie down, read, pray, think, nap, or do nothing at all. There’s no right way and nothing to follow. If your mind wanders, let it. The music will be right where you left it.
A word about expectations.
I designed this for rest and reflection, and I find it calming. But I’m a sound designer, not a doctor, and the research on binaural beats is mixed. Treat this as music with a gentle atmosphere, not as a treatment for anything.
About the number.
Yes, there are 77 tracks.
I know.
As a recovering Catholic who keeps falling off the agnostic wagon, I apparently have more reverence in me than I’d like to admit.
The devil made me do it.
Rest Well,
JJ, Sound Designer
Binaural Beat: 6 Hz (Theta)
Theta (4-7 Hz) is the band most associated with deep relaxation, contemplation, and a hypnagogic, drifting-but-aware state. 6 Hz sits at the upper end of theta and is associated with relaxed, drifting awareness, which suits “rest and reflection.”
Carrier Frequencies (A=440 Hz Tuning)
Binaural beats work best with carriers below roughly 1000 Hz, and the lower-to-mid range (around 100-250 Hz) tends to be the most comfortable and pronounced. These carriers are warm and low, easy on the ears over long listening, and the beat is clearly perceptible.
The left carrier sits exactly on F3, so it is consonant with the music’s tonic. The right carrier is offset by +6 Hz, about 59 cents sharp of F3.
A Note on the Offset
Any F in the music reaches both ears, so the right ear will hear a real, audible 6 Hz amplitude wobble between the carrier and the drone, on top of the binaural beat. At low carrier levels this reads as gentle shimmer, but it is a true acoustic effect, not just something perceived in the brain.
Building the Music
Practical Mixing Process
A Note on Expectations
Research on binaural beats is mixed. Some studies show modest effects on relaxation and anxiety, while others show little beyond what calming music alone provides. That doesn’t diminish the project’s value, since the combined atmosphere is what makes it work, but I avoid making strong health claims regarding the physiological effects, which vary listener to listener.
Main Text to Music (Album-Wide) Prompt
Create a seamless, continuous, entirely instrumental ambient soundscape forrest and reflection. Play it in F major over a constant, unwavering low Fdrone (F3) that never stops and never changes pitch. Make it serene andsacred in feeling, without belonging to any one tradition. Keep it warm, spacious, unhurried, and gently luminous.Do not write a melody. Use only slow, sustained tones and very slow chordchanges over the F pedal point, drawing mainly on F, Bb, C, and Gsus2colors. Touch on D minor only as a brief, passing color, never as asustained or dominant harmony, and always return to major warmth. Keep theharmony diatonic and consonant, with no sharp dissonance.Use soft synth pads with 3-5 second attacks and long releases, a sustainedlow F drone, bowed cello and viola with long, blended bow changes, breathyalto flute with soft onsets, bowed vibraphone, glass harmonica, harmonium, and delicate bowed string harmonics. Make roughly 65% of the sound synth padand drone, and 35% soft acoustic color.Use no tempo, no meter, and no pulse. Let the music evolve in slow swells of30-60 seconds, fading every note in and out so none has an audible frontedge. Use a wide stereo field and a smooth, long, diffuse reverb tail. Keepdynamics quiet and even, the mix soft and low in volume, and the highfrequencies smooth and rounded, with nothing sharp or bright.
Negative Prompt
Do not include drums, percussion, beats, rhythm, pulse, ticks, clicks, plucked notes, piano, harp, kalimba, bells, chimes, singing bowls, arpeggios, repeated figures, ostinato, tremolo, heavy vibrato, rhythmicdelay or echo, sidechain pumping, vocals, choir, humming, spoken word, field recordings, nature sounds, crescendos to a climax, key changes, modulation, sustained minor-key sections, sad or gloomy mood, dissonance, distortion, or sharp transients.
Compact Version
Make an instrumental ambient drone in F major over a constant low F pedal(F3). Use soft synth pads, bowed cello, breathy alto flute, glass harmonica, and harmonium. Mostly major harmony, minor only as a brief passing color. No percussion, rhythm, or vocals. Slow swells, long reverb, serene, sacred, warm, quiet.
