A Note Before The First Falling Flakes…

There’s a stretch of the year I’ve always thought of as the quiet room between two seasons. The color has dropped, the trees are bare, and the light goes early and low, a pale gold that seems to be leaving even as you look at it. The snow hasn’t come yet. Everything is waiting.

This album is my attempt to sit in that room with you.

I spent my teenage years loving the records of the 1980s that made a whole genre out of simply being still. Solo piano, ringing acoustic guitar, a cello in the corner, and plenty of space between the notes. They were made for lamplight, for rainy windows, for the end of a long day. November’s Fading Light is my homage to that tradition, written and shaped as music for quiet listening.

It isn’t meant to demand anything of you. Put it on while you cook, read, walk, write, or watch the dusk come in. Or give it your full attention once, start to finish, and let the silences do their work.

About The Music

The album is entirely instrumental and entirely acoustic in spirit. There are no drums, no synthesizers, and no vocals, only the sounds of piano, steel-string guitar, cello, and the lightest touch of flute, recorded (or rather, imagined) in a warm, close, natural room with long decays.

The individual tracks follow the arc of the month itself. They begin with the first cold morning, move through falling leaves and fireside warmth, pass through the emptiest, stillest stretch of the season, and then turn, gently, toward something hopeful. The last piece is a simple hymn of thanks.

How To Ideally Listen

  • Volume, Low to moderate. This music works best at the edge of the room, not the center of it.
  • Setting, Dusk, ideally, with a warm drink and the lights turned down.
  • Order, The album is sequenced as a journey, so I’d suggest listening front to back at least once.
  • Headphones, Worth it for the entire album. You’ll hear the room tone and the long decay of each note.

How This Album Was Made

In the interest of being straightforward with you, as I share with each project, this music was created with AI assistance. I composed the concept, structure, instrumentation, moods, titles, and sequence, and I wrote and refined the prompts that shaped each piece. The audio itself was generated using Google Flow Music, and I selected, edited, and arranged the results into the album you’re hearing. I’m a composer and storyteller designer at heart, and for me these tools are a new kind of instrument, one that has to be directed, listened to carefully, and edited by humanity.

This album is a tribute to a style and a feeling, not a recreation of anyone’s work. It is an independent project and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Windham Hill Records or any of the artists who inspired it.

Thank You

To the musicians who taught a generation how to listen quietly. To everyone who has ever put on a record at the end of a hard day. And to you, for giving the next minutes to the slow turn of the year.

Take a breath.

The light is fading, and that’s all right.

The snows are coming…

Text-To-Music Prompt (Google Flow Music)

Instrumental only, no vocals, no lyrics, no choir. Intimate acoustic New Age / contemplative instrumental album in the 1980s Windham Hill tradition, themed around November, bare trees, gray light, woodsmoke, early dusk, quiet before the first snow. Mood, wistful, calm, tender, nostalgic, never sad or dramatic. Recording style, warm, close-miked analog studio sound, natural room reverb, long decays, soft tape warmth, wide gentle stereo image, generous silence between phrases. Primary sounds, solo grand piano with soft felt-like touch and sustain pedal bloom, fingerstyle steel-string acoustic guitar in open tuning with ringing open strings, occasional solo cello or viola for warmth, very light alto flute or English horn. Harmony, modal folk and minor-inflected major chords, suspended chords, open fifths, no dissonance. Dynamics, soft to medium, gradual swells, no sudden loud moments. Strictly acoustic, no drums, no synthesizers, no electronic beats, no heavy percussion, no pop production, no vocals, no EDM, no cinematic trailer swells. Unhurried tempo, melody-forward, spacious, meditative.
