I didn’t plan to make an album about running. I set out to make something that sounded like the Andes at 2 a.m., charango and dub bass, tape hiss and cold air, and somewhere in the making of it, a woman appeared. I don’t know her name. I do know she’s moving south, and I know she isn’t stopping until the road does.

There’s a lighthouse near Ushuaia called Les Éclaireurs. The Scouts, it means, French, oddly, not Spanish, named by a naval captain who passed through a hundred and forty years before any of this. It guides ships safely past the rocks. It has done its job, faithfully, for over a century. I think about that a lot, something built to lead people somewhere, standing at the one place on the continent where there’s nowhere left to lead them to. After that light, there’s only the Drake Passage, and then there’s nothing but water until Antarctica.

That felt true and bittersweet to me. Not sad, exactly, just factual. Some journeys don’t end in arrival. They end in the running out of further to trek.

So this collection of songs is that night. Leaving. The mountains passing in the dark. The thing she won’t quite name, chasing or not chasing her, I never decided, and I don’t think you need to either. The doubt somewhere past the halfway point, when turning back still feels possible. And then the coast, and the light sweeping over the water on its slow ten-second rotation, indifferent and faithful at once.

I don’t know if she finds peace at the end of the world. I know she finds the end, or is that a beginning? Sometimes that has to be enough.

Ushuaia was also, once, a place people were sent to disappear. I didn’t forget that while I was writing this. I don’t think you should either.
