Largehearted Boy’s Favorite Nonfiction Books of 2023

These six nonfiction books are my favorites of 2023, the titles I most recommended to friends and Largehearted Boy readers (my personal definition of “favorite”).

Black Punk Now edited by Chris L. Terry & James Spooner

Black Punk Now is an anthology both captivating and educational as the community behind black punk in all its forms is explored in fiction, nonfiction, comics, interviews, and more.

The Dead are Gods by Eirinie Carson

Eirinie Carson’s memoir The Dead are Gods is an auspicious debut, an evocative and deeply moving exploration of friendship and grief.

Everything/Nothing/Someone by Alice Carrière

Alice Carrière’s Everything/Nothing/Someone is the most resonant memoir I have read all year, a compelling, visceral, and breathtakingly moving book.

How To Think Like a Woman by Regan Penaluna

Regan Penaluna’s book How to Think Like a Woman brilliantly melds memoir with biographies of influential female philosophers. A book as important as it is fascinating and incisive.

Joy Rides through the Tunnel of Grief by Jessica Hendry Nelson

Jessica Hendry Nelson’s Joy Rides through the Tunnel of Grief is one of the year’s best memoirs; inventive, profound, and almost impossibly moving and inspirational.

Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City by Jane Wong

Jane Wong’s Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City is a stunning coming-of-age memoir.
