Jangly lo-fi indie guitar pop, Dunedin Sound style, circa 1982-1985 New Zealand. Chiming, treble-heavy Rickenbacker-style guitar arpeggios layered over a simple, driving, slightly-behind-the-beat drum pattern. Warm, melodic, hooky bassline sitting high in the mix, almost as prominent as the guitars.
Lo-fi, hissy, four-track cassette recording quality, no polish, no gloss, room tone bleeding through, cymbals slightly overloaded and washy. Reverb-drenched but cheap-sounding spring reverb, not a lush studio hall. Minor-to-major key shifts, bittersweet and wistful melodic feel. Mid-tempo, unhurried, slightly loose and human timing, not quantized.
Vocals sound distant, buried, doubled, and melancholic, mixed low against the instruments.
Overall atmosphere: rainy, small-town, introspective, melancholic-but-hopeful, DIY bedroom-pop charm. Analog warmth, tape saturation, subtle wow-and-flutter pitch instability.
