The Sound

Geometria del Legno is a minimalist collection for classical guitar, inspired by the Italian tradition. It uses the guitar almost entirely on its own, letting the natural sound of the instrument become the music.

The idea behind the album is simple: take away as much as possible and see what remains.

Rather than filling the music with complicated melodies, changing harmonies, or layers of instruments, these twelve pieces build slowly from simple repeating patterns. Small changes in the notes, rhythm, and accents gradually transform those patterns without ever losing their sense of simplicity.

The guitar’s sound itself becomes part of the composition. The player moves between different places on the strings, creating subtle changes in tone. Playing closer to the bridge produces a sharper, more shimmering sound, while playing closer to the fingerboard brings out warmer, deeper tones and the natural resonance of the wood.

Some pieces also use repeating patterns that overlap and slowly shift against one another. As the notes ring and fade at slightly different rates, new melodies and rhythmic patterns seem to appear almost by themselves. Nothing extra has been added. They emerge naturally from the guitar.

The album is deliberately focused on the physical character of a nylon-string classical guitar: the tiny click of a fingernail touching a string, the initial attack of each note, the soft vibration of the soundboard, the way a note gradually disappears, and the quiet resonance of the wood itself.

Ultimately, Geometria del Legno is an exploration of how much music can be found by doing less.

It is classical guitar stripped back to its essential elements: wood, strings, resonance, repetition, space, and time.
