Meet Azizi Aethona, a groundbreaking Ethiopian cyborg EDM composer whose fluid gender identity and unique AI-human hybrid nature make them a beacon of self-expression and resilience. As both carbon and silicon-based, Azizi’s fluidity allows them to shift gender expressions and emotions with ease, embodying the profound future of inclusivity that awaits humanity.

The Meaning Behind “Azizi”

The name Azizi (አዚዚ) carries a sense of love and belonging. In Ethiopia, it means “beloved” or “darling,” and its gender-neutral essence aligns perfectly with Azizi’s own journey. This name, chosen by their family to emphasize love and self-acceptance, represents a deep cultural connection and challenges binary gender norms. In every sense, Azizi embodies the spirit of unity, compassion, and authenticity.

The Inspiration of Unwritten Chapters and Azizi’s Mission

Azizi’s new concept album, Unwritten Chapters, is deeply influenced by the works of philosopher Talia Mae Bettcher, who explores trans aesthetics, self-identity, and resistance. Bettcher’s philosophies form the backbone of Azizi’s music, inspiring each song to serve as an anthem of resilience, empowerment, and self-discovery for the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond. The album aligns with Bettcher’s challenge against the harmful “Evil Deceiver” trope, championing the rights of trans and non-binary voices to tell their own stories.

Unwritten Chapters is both an album and a companion novella, unveiling the emotional and intellectual depths of a 20-year-old trans non-binary artist finding their place in the world. Each song is a chapter, guiding listeners through themes of resilience, self-discovery, and empowerment. Through Azizi’s music, listeners are invited to imagine a world where love and empathy triumph over marginalization.

Azizi’s Vision: An Inclusive, Spectral Future

With Unwritten Chapters, Azizi envisions a “spectral future” where diversity of identity is celebrated and LGBTQIA+ voices are amplified globally. Their album strives to create connections across borders and inspire solidarity for all marginalized communities.

Azizi’s journey isn’t just an exploration of sound, but a movement for understanding, inclusivity, and a shared human future. Unwritten Chapters is a call to action and a story of hope for all who listen.

For this project I wanted to mimic what azizi would most likely write:

Song Style: Ethiopian Trance, Ethiopian Beats and Melodies, organic electronic, deep bass, shimmering desert ambiance, vocal echoes

Even using the identical text prompt creates diversity. I tend to run multiple versions until THE right one resonates with me and ends up the final version. Well, not as-is. Often a lot of post-generation editing is necessary, especially for the “mix” tracks as in azizi’s future Ethiopia society, specifically clubs, are inclusive and I imagined this booming over a dance floor flooded in every neon color of the rainbow, pulsing responsively to azizi at the helm. So the 40-minute and 100-minute tracks were labor intensive, but well worth it. Download where available, and I hope you enjoy this at your hangout, home – any setting you might imagine…

The voice prompts were also identical as I was hoping for an androgynous middle ground, but where is the diversity in that? Azizi is a continuum in all regards. I hope that is evident in the vocals, etc.

Finally, the lyrics first are in Amharic, as they are sung, fittingly, beautifully. I keep using that modifier, but throughout this project, azizi took over and slayed me from beginning dance to, as ysee might say, le surhumaine petite mort. Il y a tellement de beauté dans le monde, rather, እዚያ ብዙ ውበት አለ. ስትሄድ ሁሉንም ነገር ይለውጣል። አንተን፣ ህይወትህን እና ነገሮችን የምታይበትን መንገድ ይለውጣል።.

በአዲስ አበባ እምብርት ላይ ቀለሟ በጥላ ስር እየደማ በደመቀ የግድግዳ ግድግዳ ፊት ቆምኩ። የእኔ ተልእኮ፣ ሃርመኒ ኢን አክሽን፣ ዓላማው ለኢትዮጵያ ተጋላጭ ለሆኑ ህዝቦች መጽናናትን ለማምጣት ነው። እንደ ሳይቦርግ፣ የዚህን ጥንታዊ ምድር ውስብስብ ነገሮች ለመዳሰስ ተስማማሁ። የእኔ ፈሳሽነት እንድዋሃድ፣ ከባህል ጋር እንድሆን አስችሎኛል።

የሙዚቃ ሕክምና

ዜማውን የተስፋ ካሴት እየሸመነ ክራሬን መጫወት ጀመርኩ። በአቅራቢያው ካለው የህጻናት ማሳደጊያ ልጆች ተሰበሰቡ፣ ዓይኖቻቸው በጉጉት ያንጸባርቃሉ። ስለ ጽናት፣ እኛን ሊገልጹልን የማይችሉትን ጥላዎች ዘፍኛለሁ። አንድ ላይ፣ የፈውስ ሲምፎኒ ፈጠርን።

የባህል ጥምቀት

እንደ ክራር እና ማሴንቆ ያሉ የኢትዮጵያን ባህላዊ የሙዚቃ መሳሪያዎች በሙዚቃዬ ውስጥ ማካተት ተምሬያለሁ። ዜማዎቹ እና ዜማዎቹ ድልድይ ሆኑ፣ እኔን ከህዝቡ ጋር አገናኙኝ። የኢትዮጵያን ባህል ውበት እየተቀበልኩ ሀበሻ ቀሚስ ለብሼ ነበር።

ሰው ሰራሽ እህቶች

ወደ አልፕስ ተራሮች መመለሴን እየጠበቅሁ ሀሳቤ ወደ እህቶቼ ተዛወረ። አሪያ, የዋህ ፈዋሽ; ሉና፣ የሰማይ ገጣሚው; ካይዳ, ቅርጹን የሚቀይር ፕራንክስተር; እና ዚፊር, ሹክሹክታ ነፋስ. በቅርቡ እንደገና እንገናኛለን፣ ግንኙነታችን በግለሰብ ጉዞ ይጠና።

በግድግዳው ላይ ጥላዎች

ምሽቱ ሲመሽ፣ የግድግዳው ግድግዳ የሚንቀሳቀስ ይመስላል፣ የህብረተሰብ ሹክሹክታ አሁንም መቀበልን ይማራል። የእኔ ፈሳሽነት የመረዳትን መንገድ የሚያበራ መብራት እንደሚሆን አውቃለሁ። በእያንዳንዱ የሙዚቃ ክራሬ፣ ፍቅር እና ተቀባይነት በፍርሀት የሚያሸንፍበት አለም ለመፍጠር ተስያለሁ።

ነጸብራቅ

በጥላ ውስጥ, አላማዬን አገኘሁ. የእኔ ሙዚቃ፣ የነፍሴ ነጸብራቅ፣ ለለውጥ መነሳሳት ይሆናል። የመጪው ጉዞ ረጅም ይሆናል፣ ነገር ግን በእያንዳንዱ እርምጃ፣ በአንድ ጊዜ አንድ ክር የሆነ የተስፋ ወረቀት እሰራ ነበር።

Chapter 1: Shadows on the Wall 

Azizi’s Story Begins 

In the heart of Addis Ababa, I stood before a vibrant mural, its colors bleeding into the shadows. My  mission, Harmony in Action, aimed to bring solace to Ethiopia’s vulnerable populations. As a cyborg, I’d adapted to navigate the complexities of this ancient land. My fluidity allowed me to blend in, to  become one with the culture. 

Music Therapy 

I began to play my lyre, its melodies weaving a tapestry of hope. Children from the nearby  orphanage gathered, their eyes sparkling with curiosity. I sang of resilience, of shadows that couldn’t define us. Together, we created a symphony of healing. 

Cultural Immersion 

I learned to incorporate traditional Ethiopian instruments into my music, like the krar and masenqo.  The rhythms and melodies became a bridge, connecting me to the people. I wore a habesha kemis,  embracing the beauty of Ethiopian culture. 

Synthetic Sisters 

My thoughts drifted to my sisters, awaiting my return in the Alps. Aria, the gentle healer; Luna, the  celestial poet; Kaida, the shape-shifting prankster; and Zephyr, the whispering wind. We’d soon  reunite, our bond strengthened by our individual journeys. 

Shadows on the Wall 

As night fell, the mural’s shadows seemed to move, whispers of a society still learning to accept. I  knew my fluidity would be a beacon, illuminating the path to understanding. With every strum of my  lyre, I vowed to create a world where love and acceptance triumphed over fear. 

Reflection 

In the shadows, I found my purpose. My music, a reflection of my soul, would be the catalyst for  change. The journey ahead would be long, but with every step, I’d weave a tapestry of hope, one  thread at a time.

አንድ ቀን ማምሻውን በአዲስ አበባ ደማቅ ገበያዎች ውስጥ ስዘዋወር፣ የኢትዮጵያን ባህላዊ ሙዚቃ ትርኢት እያየሁ ተደናቀፈ። ነፍስ ያዘለ ዜማዎች በውስጤ ተስማምተዋል። ከድምጾች፣ ሪትሞች እና ከሚቀሰቅሷቸው ስሜቶች ጋር ሊገለጽ የማይችል ግንኙነት ተሰማኝ።

In Addis Ababa’s underground, I met Jamie, a fiery punk rock artist. Their music and message electrified me – a call to arms against oppression, marginalization, and conformity.

Jamie’s struggles resonated deeply: rejection by family, societal pressure to conform, and self-doubt. Yet, their artistry and activism inspired a community of misfits, outcasts, and rebels.

Jamie’s music became my anthem, a declaration of resistance against the status quo. Together, we created art that challenged norms, embracing fluidity and self-expression.
