AP-NORC poll shows Americans still agree on most core American values

Editor’s Note: Most of humanity shares more in common than contrast. TATANKA will prove that by real-world example.

Despite deep political polarization, a recent poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals that most Americans share common core beliefs about what it means to be an American.

Core Beliefs of Americans

The poll found that approximately 9 in 10 U.S. adults consider the right to vote, equal protection under the law, privacy, and freedom of religion as extremely important or very important to the nation’s identity.

Partisan Differences

While there are small variances between Republicans and Democrats on various freedoms and rights, both groups largely agree on the fundamental values. The right to bear arms stands out as a core value more commonly associated with Republicans.

Political Polarization

These findings are particularly significant in a time of heightened partisanship and concerns over potential violence during a volatile election year. Despite these challenges, the poll highlights a surprising level of convergence among Americans on essential issues.

“If you get a bunch of normal people at random and put them in a room together and chat about issues, there’s a lot more convergence than you might imagine,” said Michael Albertus, a political science professor at the University of Chicago.

At Global Scale

Human values are the principles, standards, and beliefs that guide individuals in their daily lives and interactions with others. While it is true that different cultures and societies may have unique customs and traditions, there is a universal set of values that most of humanity shares. These values form the basis of our moral compass and serve as a foundation for how we conduct ourselves in society. Despite our differences in beliefs and practices, there are common threads that unite us as humans and shape our understanding of right and wrong.

One of the core values that most of humanity shares is the belief in the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. Regardless of race, religion, or background, people everywhere recognize the importance of treating others with respect and kindness. This value forms the basis of human rights and underpins the principles of equality and justice that are enshrined in legal systems around the world.

Another shared value among most of humanity is the importance of honesty and integrity in all aspects of life. From personal relationships to professional interactions, people value honesty as a cornerstone of trust and credibility. When someone is dishonest or deceitful, it undermines the integrity of the social fabric and erodes the foundation of trust that binds communities together.

Compassion and empathy are also universal values that resonate with people across cultures and societies. The ability to understand and share the feelings of others is a fundamental aspect of humanity that transcends language and borders. Compassion drives people to alleviate suffering and support those in need, fostering a sense of solidarity and interconnectedness among individuals.

Respect for diversity and tolerance of differences are principles that most of humanity holds dear. While individuals may have varying beliefs and opinions, they understand the importance of accepting and celebrating diversity in all its forms. This value promotes inclusivity and fosters a sense of belonging for individuals from different backgrounds and walks of life.

The value of education and knowledge is another common thread that unites humanity. The pursuit of learning and intellectual growth is a universal aspiration that transcends cultural boundaries and empowers individuals to achieve their full potential. Education serves as a catalyst for personal development and societal progress, enabling people to overcome ignorance and expand their horizons.

The importance of family and community is a value that resonates with people around the world. The bonds of kinship and friendship provide a sense of belonging and support that is essential for emotional well-being and social cohesion. Families and communities serve as the building blocks of society, providing a sense of continuity and stability in an ever-changing world.

The value of freedom and autonomy is a cornerstone of human rights and democracy. Individuals value the ability to make choices and pursue their own goals without undue interference or oppression. Freedom of expression, belief, and assembly are fundamental rights that empower individuals to voice their opinions and participate in the political process.

The value of justice and fairness is a guiding principle that shapes legal systems and social norms across cultures. People value the idea of holding individuals and institutions accountable for their actions and ensuring that everyone is treated equitably under the law. Justice serves as a safeguard against tyranny and discrimination, promoting a society where rights are respected and disputes are resolved fairly.

The value of environmental stewardship and sustainability is an increasingly important concern for humanity. People recognize the need to preserve and protect the natural world for future generations, understanding the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the impact of human activities on the planet. Sustainability practices and environmental conservation efforts are essential for maintaining a healthy planet and ensuring the well-being of all living beings.

While there may be differences in customs and traditions among different cultures and societies, most of humanity shares a common set of values that guide our interactions with others and shape our understanding of right and wrong. These universal values form the foundation of our moral compass and serve as a source of unity and cohesion in a diverse and interconnected world. By recognizing and upholding these shared values, we can promote a more just, equitable, and compassionate society for all.
